I'm rather new at this.
I'd really like to put "Murder in the Mail" in big black letters next to the logo up there. ANy idea how I can do that? A plugin? widget? something like that?

Depends on what the splash is behind (the red background). Create a shape the size you need with a transparent background with the text the size you want and put it in as an image. It's been ages since I've played with the backend of a forum.
